The wine
Located in the Carneros District on the Napa side, Hyde Vineyard is characterized by gently sloping hills whose summer temperatures are moderated by marine airflow from the Petaluma Gap. The vineyard benefits from ancient stream beds for drainage and scattered stones. The soil is made of heavy Haire Clay Loam, which limits vine growth and yield due to the impermeable clay subsoil. The clonal selection includes the Old Wente field selection. Ramey Wine Cellars planted their Chardonnay block in 1997 and 1999, which contributes to the vineyard's unique characteristics.
The winery
Ramey Wine Cellars, founded by David and Carla Ramey in 1996, has significantly influenced California winemaking in the 21st century and set a new standard. The winery combines time-honored techniques with high-quality grapes from Sonoma and Napa, making it one of California's iconic wineries. The Ramey family has a long-standing collaboration with multiple generations of winemakers to produce single-vineyard wines and cuvées that showcase the distinctive characteristics of their vineyards. The second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, took over co-presidency of the winery in 2021. Their vision remains constant: to create classic Sonoma and Napa wines that are among the best in the world.
